The notion that adults should strive for 10,000 steps a day is more a marketing ploy to sell fitness trackers than a scientific guideline, according to Steven Riechman, an associate professor in the department of kinesiology and sport management at Texas A&M University, who wasn’t involved in the study. Riechman said that the body goes through a number of adaptations as it shifts from rest mode to exercise mode — changes that take a bit of time. That could explain why people who walked in bouts shorter than five minutes didn’t see as strong health gains, he said.
