Panels, Events Celebrate 20 Years Of The George H.W. Bush Center Oct. 20-21

The 20th anniversary celebration of the Bush Library and Museum in College Station includes a pair of panel discussions and family-friendly events the weekend of Oct. 20-21.
“Sharing the Story: Researching the Bush Administration,” Friday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m., Annenberg Presidential Conference Center
The “Sharing the Story: Researching the Bush Administration” panel will feature former George H.W. Bush White House speechwriter and 41ON41 documentary executive producer Mary Kate Cary and fellow panelists Jeff Engel, founding director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University; Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs and Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush.”
Following a showing of outtakes from the film, Cary will join the panelists in discussing their experiences researching the George H.W. Bush presidency at the Bush Library and Museum and the resources available on President Bush and the Bush administration available at the Bush Library and the Miller Center for Oral History.
“Unlocking the Mystery: Declassifying the Bush Administration Documents,” Friday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m., Annenberg Presidential Conference Center
The “Unlocking the Mystery: Declassifying the Bush Administration Documents” panel will discuss the classification and declassification of government information between University of Colorado-Boulder American diplomatic history professor Tom Zeiler, U.S. Department of State historian Stephen Randolph, George Washington University National Security Archive Director Thomas Blanton and Bush School of Government and Public Service senior lecturer James Olson.
Topics will include the fine line between the public’s right to know and national safety and security, and most importantly, the 25-year declassification rule described in E.O. 12958, and what that means for Bush presidential records beginning in January 2018. A moderated question and answer session will follow.
“Family Fest,” Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum
“Family Fest” will include carnival games, bounce houses and complimentary refreshments. While the activities will take place at the pond, there will be free admission to the museum during museum business hours from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Storyteller Bernadette Nason will share a two-story program, linked with President Bush’s career, perfect for age 4 and up. These will take place in the orientation theater at 10:15, 11:45 and 1:15. Special thanks to Blue Bell Ice Cream and Pepsi for providing ice cream and drinks.
