Four Texas A&M faculty members inducted to the AIMBE College of Fellows

Nationally recognized scholars join elite ranks in medical and biological engineering, advancing research, innovation and education at Texas A&M and beyond.

Four Texas A&M University faculty members have earned induction into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE) College of Fellows — one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to medical and biological engineers.

Representing the College of Engineering and the School of Engineering Medicine, these educators are now a part of the top-two percent of medical and biological engineers as well as a scholarly body representative of the most accomplished medical and biological engineers in academia, industry, education, clinical practice and government.

“Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering possess a broad breadth of expertise, and their contributions garner interdisciplinary recognitions ranging from memberships within the National Academies, the Presidential Medal of Science and Nobel prizes,” said Dr. Blanca Lupiani, vice provost for faculty affairs. “The impacts Texas A&M’s newest AIMBE fellows have had within their disciplines not only meet of the standard of the institute but continue to enrich the dynamic community of AIMBE fellow faculty members leading the university’s academic and research enterprises.”

“It is particularly outstanding that two of our AIMBE inductees are unusual selectees in that they are still associate professors–and they have already been recognized at the national level for their impact on biomedical engineering,” said Dr. Frances S. Ligler, Texas A&M University Distinguished Professor and 2012 AIMBE College of Fellows inductee. “All four of the inductees are stars, and we are proud of Texas A&M’s leadership in improving our nation’s healthcare.”

These new inductees have made outstanding contributions to pioneering new research, implementing innovative practices and developing transformational education methods. Their accomplishments include the engineering of microphysiological systems, pioneering simulations of neurodegenerative diseases, innovating new cancer studies with respect to regenerative healing, developing medical devices to improve surgical safety in clinical practice, and integrating bioengineers into clinical societies.

“Our AIMBE inductees are not only recognized as leaders in areas of research that are critical to advancing healthcare, but they are also exerting broader impact through their proactive, creative efforts in education, outreach, translation, commercialization, and advocacy,” said Dr. Michael McShane, Texas A&M James J. Cain Professor of Biomedical Engineering and 2014 AIMBE College of Fellows inductee. “They are all still on a trajectory of growth in terms of what they can accomplish, so we are anticipating that Texas A&M’s influence on biomedical engineering and related areas will continue to expand with the benefit of their leadership.”
