What started as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1876 with just 106 students is now one of the largest student bodies in the U.S. with 66,000 students.Texas A&M’s research prowess proved to be an engine for growth in recent years. Today, Texas A&M is 17th in a National Science Foundation (NSF) ranking based on annual expenditures in research and development.Texas A&M is home to a prestigious faculty, with 72 members belonging to national academies.The surrounding Bryan-College Station community has grown in stride with Texas A&M the past half century, becoming one of the best college towns in the country.The classroom and the laboratory aren’t the only places Texas A&M has achieved excellence on a national level. Since 1983, Aggie athletes have won 12 NCAA championships.Texas A&M has been a top performer in the Southeastern Conference since joining in 2012, winning 16 conference championships.Aggie athletes perform at the same high level on the field of play as they do in the classroom with 66 Academic All-Americans since 1956.
