MSC Renovation, Expansion Under Way

The Memorial Student Center is closed for renovation and expansion and fenced off on all sides.

Aggies returning to campus for the start of the fall semester are encountering a big change: The Memorial Student Center is closed for renovation and expansion and fenced off on all sides. However, most MSC activities are continuing – just not in their traditional locations – and MSC President Stephanie Burns and other student leaders are going to great lengths to make everyone aware of the new sites for their favorite activities.

To help new and returning students find the departments and organizations that were formerly in the MSC, relocation postcards for distribution to students have been sent out to several entities on campus, including the Housing Office, the University Libraries, the Financial Aid Office, the University Center information desk in the Koldus Building, the University Apartments Community Center, the residence halls and Corps of Cadet dormitories, the MSC Bookstore and to off-campus students via the Department of Student Life’s neighborhood walks. Also, a list of those relocations is available at http://OurMSC.tamu.edu.

Additionally, signs are posted on the fence surrounding the construction area, and at several other well-traveled locations, showing where various offices are now located and activities headquartered.

One of the most visible moves resulting from the closure is that of the MSC Bookstore. It is now prominently located on the main floor of G. Rollie White Coliseum – just across the street from the south side of the MSC.

In brief ceremonies closing the MSC, Burns turned over the keys to the building to a fellow Aggie, Bill Vaughn ’71, of the firm that bears his name and that will oversee the project — thus transforming it from a memorial to a construction area.

While noting that the next two-and-a-half years will be challenging, Burns and others involved in the project say the reopening of the MSC in 2012 will be well worth the wait. Consensus: “The renovated Memorial Student Center will be safer, larger and a better tribute to our Aggie spirit and rich history.”
