Texas A&M University announces medical education leadership appointments

Dr. Timothy B. Boone named dean of the School of Engineering Medicine; Dr. Amy L. Waer reappointed as dean of the Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine.

Texas A&M University has announced two high-level leadership appointments across its medical education programs.

Timothy B. Boone, has been appointed dean of the School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed), effective Jan. 1, 2026. Boone has served as interim dean since September 2024, providing steady leadership during a key phase of the school’s development.

With nearly four decades of clinical experience, Boone is a globally recognized leader in neuro-urology and a nationally respected authority in medical education and accreditation. His career reflects the integration of patient care, research and physician training. Under his leadership, EnMed has continued work toward becoming Texas A&M’s second accredited medical school.

Boone previously served as chief education officer for the Houston Methodist Academic Institute, where he launched new graduate medical education programs and helped establish Houston Methodist Hospital as a clinical campus for the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine in 2014. A founding leader of the partnership that created EnMed, Boone has continued to guide the school’s accreditation and academic development. His appointment reflects the ongoing partnership between Texas A&M and Houston Methodist that established EnMed.

Established in 2016, the School of Engineering Medicine is a collaborative initiative among Texas A&M’s Colleges of Engineering and Medicine, and Houston Methodist Hospital. The school focuses on translational interdisciplinary research, medical technology development and the training of “physicianeers.” Together with Texas A&M’s broader health science enterprise — including the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and the School of Public Health — EnMed focuses on interdisciplinary research, medical technology development and integrating engineering and medicine in health care education.

In addition, Amy L. Waer has been reappointed dean of the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine for a second term. Waer has served as dean since January 2021, following her appointment as interim dean in 2019.

During Waer’s tenure, the College of Medicine has advanced its academic mission, strengthened clinical and community partnerships and expanded its education and research initiatives. Her leadership has included the successful naming of the college, major philanthropic investment, expansion of rural and aerospace medicine initiatives and continued progress in research, accreditation and fiscal stewardship.

Under Waer’s leadership, the college has placed increased emphasis on shared governance, transparency and engagement across academic and clinical units.

“These leadership appointments reflect the strength and alignment of Texas A&M’s medical education and health science enterprise,” said Dr. Alan Sams, provost and executive vice president. “Together, they position the university to lead nationally in integrating medicine, engineering and clinical practice while educating physicians and physicianeers to address critical health challenges in Texas and beyond.”
